Lady Legacy Scholarship Foundation
Pursuing Excellence in Golf and in Education

MISSION STATEMENT: The Lady Legacy Scholarship Foundation serves all female golfers in the counties of Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount, Tuscaloosa and Walker by providing educational services and competition with integrity in the true spirit of the game of golf. The Foundation supports junior golf and high school girls' golf programs and provides college scholarships to deserving female golfers.

The Lady Legacy Scholarship Foundation (LLSF) was established in 1999 as a 501(c) (3) entity to serve the counties of Blount, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Tuscaloosa, and Walker. It is the mission of the Lady Legacy Scholarship Foundation to pursue excellence in golf and in education.

To that end and in partnership with the Ladies Birmingham Golf Association, the LLSF serves:

  • To provide scholarships to deserving young women who are pursuing baccalaureate degrees at accredited colleges and universities in Alabama.
  • To make grants to high school programs, educational activities, or other charitable activities to support young women's golf programs.
  • To conduct the annual Lady Legacy Metro Championship held to identify the champion of the counties of Blount, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Tuscaloosa, and Walker.

The Lady Legacy Metro Championship is the chief fundraising arm of the LLSF. Donations and sponsors are solicited from individual and business sources. Donations are tax deductible. Tax receipts are provided.

The first scholarship award of $500.00 in 1995 was given to Karey Pettus, who grew up participating in the LBGA Junior Golf Program. Among her many high school honors Karey was Student Council President and a member of the National Honor Society. In 1998 the scholarship award was raised to $1000.00. Karey graduated from Samford University in 1999. This scholarship #1 was named the Miller/Shaw Scholarship.

The second recipient chosen for the years 1998-2002 was Joy Gettys of Sterrett, Alabama. Joy was active in LBGA Junior Golf for several years. She served as president of Chelsea High School Student Council, and received the Beta Club leadership award. Joy will graduate with honors from Auburn University with a degree in education in May 2002. This Scholarship #2 was named the Underwood Scholarship

The Miller-Shaw 2000-2004 Lady Legacy Scholarship was awarded to Rachael Tawbush, an outstanding honor graduate of Erwin High School where her accomplishments included National Honor Society, National Leadership Award, varsity basketball and golf teams while maintaining a 4.5 GPA. Rachel completed three years at the University of South Alabama as a biology major with a 3.44 grade point average. She transferred to the University of Alabama-Birmingham where she graduated in 2005.

The 2002-2006 Underwood scholarship recipient, Rachel Blair attended the University of Alabama-Birmingham for one year before withdrawing for health and personal reasons.

A one- year $2000 scholarship was awarded to Stephanie Pendergrass for the 2003-2004 school year. Stephanie graduated in 2004 from Jacksonville State University with a degree in communications.

The Miller-Shaw 2004-2008 scholarship was awarded to Christa Frazier of Minor High School. Christa graduated first in her class and received numerous honors and awards. Christa is now a senior at the University of Montevallo with a GPA of 3.460.

The 2005-2009 Underwood Scholarship was awarded to Tiffany Story of Pinson Valley High School. Tiffany graduated first in her class, excelling in academics and athletics. Tiffany is attending the University of Alabama in the Honors Program, where she is now a junior with a GPA of 3.265.

Mary Margaret Pope of Hoover High School received a four-year scholarship to Jacksonville State University. This scholarship #3 for 2007-2011 was named the Baggio Scholarship.

A fourth scholarship, the Tillie Bailey Scholarship for 2007-2011, was awarded to Claire Hardison of Vestavia Hills High School to attend Samford University. This special scholarship was given by Neil Bailey in honor of his wife, Tillie.

The recipient of the 2008-2012 Miller-Shaw Scholarship is Gaukhar Amandossova. Gaukhar came with her mother to the United States 10 years ago from Kazakhstan. Since then, her intelligence, diligence and work ethic have contributed to her fluency in English, as well as academic and athletic success. Gaukhar was a valedictorian, graduating eighth in her class of 286 at Pelham High School. She first participated in the LBGA/LPGA*USGA Girls Golf program in 2005, and by her senior year, she was captain of her schools' girls' golf team, carrying an index of 7.6. She will enter Birmingham-Southern College this fall majoring in pre-med.

The 2009-2013 Underwood Scholarship recipient is Kirby L. Mitchell. Kirby is a graduate of Thompson High School and will attend Auburn University.


Grants

The Lady Legacy Scholarship Foundation is committed also to encouraging participation in junior girls' golf. The Foundation has, for the last several years, sponsored the kickoff for the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf program of instructional clinics and playing competition with the LBGA Junior Tour. A grant of $100 was awarded to this program for 2005. Additional grants of $100 each were given in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

In 2004, a grant of $500 was awarded to Emily Cooper of Hoover to facilitate her studies at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, NY. An additional grant of $250 was awarded to Emily for the 2005-06 academic year. Emily was awarded another grant of $340 to purchase educational supplies for the 2006-07 academic year. Her studies continue at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf where she has a grade point average of 3.34. A grant of $340 was awarded to Emily in 2007 to purchase educational software.

In 2007, a grant of $500 was awarded to Gardendale High School Girls Golf Team for equipment and competition expenses. A grant of $200 was awarded to Shades Valley High School for start up expenses for a girls' golf team.

The Lady Rocket Golfers are 2007 and 2008 grant recipients. The Team was the 2007AHSAA 1A-5A Runner-up and 2007 Section 2 Champions.

In 2008, grants were awarded to seven area high school girls' golf teams to purchase equipment and pay tournament expenses. Those schools were Gardendale, Ramsey, Pell City, Hewitt-Trussville, Leeds, Shades Valley, and Pinson Valley.
