The Ladies Birmingham Golf Association was officially organized and held its first meeting in 1971. The goals of the LBGA were simple:

  • To promote golf for women in the Birmingham area.
  • To encourage golf for junior girls
  • Have a city wide tournament to define a champion and low net champion among all the club champions.
  • Promote interclub play among all the clubs.
  • Establish an LPGA event for the area.
  • Promote the Rules of Golf by having a Rules Chairman at each club.

The LBGA now has 18 member associations which promote a number of programs for women of all ages.

The junior program has grown into the Junior Girls Tour during the summer months. Since 1994, the LBGA has fostered and assisted in establishing the Lady Legacy Metro Championship and the Lady Legacy Scholarship Foundation.

Lady Legacy Metro Championship is an annual event for amateur female golfers of the Birmingham area, whether they play public or private courses, and identifies the champion in each of the six counties of the metropolitan area: Blount, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Tuscaloosa, and Walker.
